Neurodivergent is “a nonmedical term that describes people whose brains develop or work differently for some reason” (Professional, 2023). While neurodivergents have unique strengths, they often face many struggles within the classroom, which include unclear and/or confusing communication and executive function (Ozturk & Kızılkan). Given that around 10-30% of students in higher education contexts identify as neurodivergent, it warrants a discussion as to how institutions can better accommodate their neurodivergent students with tools and aids that support their learning needs (Schaefer & Sanchez, 2024). As such, this blog aims to discuss what institutions can do to support their fellow neurodivergent students.

Research conducted by Butcher & Lane (2025) highlighted the importance of communication between the teacher and the student. For instance, the students showed a desire to have teachers help them “break down their assessments in a way that is understandable to their distinct educational needs, to assist in managing the project into smaller tasks, or to help interpret the question and arrange their thoughts” (Butcher & Lane, 2025). It is evident that clear communication between the teacher and the students helps neurodivergent students understand better. Other forms of support for neurodivergent students include utilising sensory supports in your class. “Some students may use fidgets, specialised earplugs that reduce background noise, sunglasses, or other tools that help them manage the sensory input of the classroom” (Midget, 2024). This, in turn, helps them pay more attention in class. Similarly, teachers should consider implementing the TILT framework in their classrooms. This framework was outlined to assist teachers in designing clear and fair assignments, which is an aid that can help neurodivergent students (TILT Higher Ed).

In sum, this blog discusses three main tips on how institutions can better accommodate their neurodivergent students. These tips include clear communication between the teacher and the student, utilising sensory support, and implementing the TILT framework. Like any other student, neurodivergent students should receive the same amount of support and consideration in terms of their academics, and these aids will support their learning needs and help them succeed in their classes.
